Writer Claudia Steinberg and I visited The Explorers Club in Manhattan, one of those places that catapult you from the snowed-in streets of New York into another dimension. The air is thick with adventurer's stories, memorabilia in every corner. A stuffed polar bear greats us on the second floor, just one of many taxidermist works in the house. The charming president Lorie Karnath (below left), herself a tireless explorer and often travelling in far corners of the world, is quick to point out that the stuffed animals are from 'back then, we don't do that anymore'. The club's members are all accomplished explorers like Ross von Burg (above in the Trophy Room) who sailed extensively and is an expert on civilian future space travel. The Club was founded in 10904 and members have been responsible for an illustrious series of famous firsts: First to the North Pole, first to the South Pole, first to the summit of Mount Everest, first to the deepest point in the ocean, first to the surface of the moon ...
